History
One night in the summer of 1993, BandWorks co-founders Jeremy Steinkoler and Steve Gibson were hanging out after a late rehearsal talking about teaching music. They each had been teaching private lessons for a number of years, and agreed that the biggest problem facing their students was that they didn't have a chance to play with other musicians. They talked about wanting to create a venue where students could play together--one where they could get the kind of practical, hands-on musical advice the founders wished they'd gotten as younger players, but had to learn over years of working as professional musicians. From that inspired conversation, the idea for BandWorks was born. After a few months of planning, we set up shop in a small room at a women's shelter in Berkeley, where we had to move furniture for 20 minutes each cl
Specialties
We get people rockin'! Rock 'n Roll camps for kids and year round classes for kids and adults. BandWorks students learn music by making music. They start playing on the first day of the session and, by learning to listen with a critical ear, improve as individual musicians and as a band. Each musician has an opportunity to expand his or her musical potential while having fun playing with other musicians.
