Established in 1973, BANANAS is a non-profit childcare referral and support agency. It provides free parenting information, workshops and referrals to family child care, child care centers, preschools, babysitters, in-home caregivers, nannies and playgroups. The agency provides subsidized childcare and back-up support that includes written materials, workshops, support groups and advice line, in different languages, training and classes to caregivers and childcare programs to assure parents a wide selection of quality care. The agency develops new childcare resources and maintains existing ones. BANANAS participates in cooperative activities in the community to work on building a better world for children and families. The agency also provides handouts, newsletters, video libraries and books on child rearing and child development. BANANAS is in Oakland, Calif.
