Alternative Family Services, headquartered in San Francisco, provides therapeutic foster care, short-term emergency care and adoption services for abused, neglected, and developmentally disabled children in the Bay Area. It is a nonprofit organization that is licensed by the state of California as a foster family agency and an adoption agency. AFS' Marin Independent Living Skills program is designed to help youth in foster placement to prepare for their independent life. Funded by the federal government, through a contract with the Marin Department of Social Services, the program accepts foster youth referred by the Marin County Department of Social Services, probation department, and foster parents.
