The Fraternal Order of the Eagles was founded in 1898 by six theatre owners in Seattle who turned competitive attitudes into attitudes of brotherhood. The Order's aim is to establish the right of every man to his own dignity and respect as well as extend help to people all over the world. This local Aerie, or nest, houses the El Cerrito and Richmond installations of the Order. The building dates back to an early unincorporated El Cerrito. The facility has a full-service bar, couches for lounging, an impressive kitchen with chopping blocks and grills, a backyard and a large meeting room. The facilities are used for everything from birthday parties to fundraisers. In this Aerie, each member is responsible for one charity. The Fraternal Order of the Eagles raises funds and grants for a plethora of causes from child abuse to spinal cord injury, Diabetes, cancer, hunger, AIDS, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. One-hundred percent of the funds raised go to charity.
