The Academic Film Archive of North America, located in San Jose, CA, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to acquiring, preserving, and promoting academic films. They are the only institution in the U.S. solely focused on documenting the history of the 16mm classroom academic film, as well as other historically important films in anthropological, ethnographic, and medical subjects.
The AFA's mission is to provide an archive, resource, and forum for scholarly advancement and public exhibition of academic films. They engage in special research projects, accept donated films, and operate a website where films are documented and made available for free access. In December 2022, they transferred their film legacy archive to Johns Hopkins University, where it will be a cornerstone of their Film Studies program.
