A Reach for Learning offers individualized instruction for students with specific learning disabilities and other learning problems. Founded in 1971, the service has been hosted at its current site since 1985. Director Corinne Gustafson says that the center serves students from around the area including Albany, Berkeley and El Cerrito.
The center's belief is that academic performance can be improved through the development of reading, writing, math, study and test-taking skills. Specialists work with children and adults and collaborate with parents, school personnel and community services to help students grow. The service involves mentoring, direct instruction and educational therapy, with tutors working to build confidence and self-esteem in each student. Instructors have post-graduate degrees, such as masters and doctorates, and specialize in math, science, writing, foreign language, study skills and test preparation.
