Myra has over 40 years experience in the field of interpretation and deafness, is a RID nationally certified interpreter since 1978, workshop presenter, interpreter educator and author, grant writer, former director of the Interpreter Education Program (1982-2006) at UALR, former communication specialist for the Helen Keller National Center, and a former Teacher of the Deaf. She is the winner of numerous public service awards and certificates of appreciation, and continues to serve on numerous committees, commissions and/or task forces.The Role of the Interpreter is to interpret between two different languages and assure that there are no barriers in communicating or understanding between persons who use sign language and persons who use spoken English. Interpreters provide accurate and culturally appropriate consecutive and/or simultaneous interpretations. Impartiality to any issues or parties involved and continual exercise of discretion by interpreters allows each party to communicate freely in his or her own language.
