The United States Department of Health and Human Services is the U.S. government's principal agency that protects the health of Americans and provides human services. The department features more than 300 programs. It provides health and science research, disease prevention, education services, faith-based and community initiatives, medical preparation, immunization solutions, Medicare and Medicaid. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services assists communities with the prevention of child abuse and domestic violence. The department develops programs for substance abuse, food and drug safety, financial assistance, and maternal and infant health. It works in coordination with state and local governments, as well as grantees from the private sector.
