Tucson International Airport currently serves as a joint civilian/military airport. The airport is in Pima County, Arizona, about ten miles from the center of Tucson and is the second largest airport in the state.
Tucson International Airport was built in 1919 and was the first airport in the country to be owned municipally. Eight years after it was built TUS began servicing commercial flights. From 1942- 1944 the USAAF West Coast Training Center for the Army and Air Force used the airport to house a contract training school. In 1963 a new terminal was added and the airport received the name it is still known by. A non-profit board runs Tucson Airport since 1948, due to the city’s funding was in disarray. The airport continues to be run by this board and prides itself on this innovative strategy.
Six airlines fly in and out of TUS, with American Airlines, Southwest and SkyWest leading with the most flights. The most popular destinations are Dallas, Los Angeles and Phoenix. While “International” is in the airport name it does not carry any passengers abroad, just cargo flights to and from Mexico.
Ground transportation at TUS is made up of rental cars, busses, shuttles and limo services. If staying near Tucson International Airport there is an on site Hyatt Place for travelers.
