Awatovi Ruins is an archaeological site located in northeastern Arizona, USA, featuring the remains of the ancient Hopi village of Awatovi and a Franciscan church that were destroyed and abandoned in the 1700s. Designated as a National Historic Landmark since 1964, the site spans approximately 9 hectares on Antelope Mesa in the Hopi reservation. Established around 1150 AD during the Pueblo III period, Awatovi was one of the first Hopi villages visited by the Spanish. The site played a significant role in early Spanish-Hopi interactions, leading to its eventual destruction during the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 and subsequent abandonment in the early 18th century.Generated from the website
