Tempe Community Development Department provides zoning and development services to the City of Tempe located in Tempe, Ariz. The Tempe City Council created the Community Development Department in March, 2005, by melding divisions previously within the Development Services Department and the Economic Development Department. This newly formed department serves to improve and develop business districts and residential areas throughout Tempe. Community Development s services include business development, historic preservation, housing services, neighborhood enhancement, redevelopment and special projects. The department also provides development and recreation at Tempe Town Lake, one of Arizona's most popular outdoor destinations. Tempe is a major suburb of Phoenix and has a population of more than 160,000.
