As a part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Marine Fisheries Service is responsible for the management, conservation and protection of the United States living marine resources and their habitats. It also assesses and predicts the status of fish inventory and works to reduce wasteful fishing practices. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration operates more than 10 regional offices and councils. Additionally, it works to prevent lost economic potential associated with declining species and degraded habitats. National Marine Fisheries Service maintains Alaska Fisheries Science Center and Piedras Blancas Field Station. It is a division of the Department of Commerce.
