UIC Construction, incorporated in 1978, is one of North America's most successful Native American owned construction companies providing complete construction services. Incorporated in 1978, UICC is a wholly owned subsidiary of Ukpeagvik Inupiat Corporation of Barrow, Alaska. UICC has successfully completed in excess of $600 million worth of projects for the public and private sector. The company provides construction services for the civil, mechanical, commercial and utilities marketplace. Many of its projects have been completed under extreme remote and inhospitable conditions in which climate, logistics and the absence of locally available skilled labor are challenges. UICC is a leader in providing cost effective administrative and maintenance personnel for the public sector in remote Alaskan communities. The Inupiat people have been living in the Barrow area for approximately 4,000 years. Traditionally, Inupiat lived in semi-permanent coastal communities located at good hunting places. In fact, 'Ukpiagvik' means 'the place for hunting snowy owls'. While mostly whale and seal hunters, the Inupait also hunted caribou, fish and waterfowl from inland areas.
