Established in 1908, the Federal Bureau of Investigation protects and defends the United States against terrorist and foreign intelligence threats, upholds and enforces the criminal laws of the United States, and provides leadership and criminal justice services to federal, state, municipal and international agencies and partners. It employs a staff of more than 30,000 employees that includes special agents and support professionals, such as intelligence analysts, language specialists, scientists and information technology professionals. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., the Federal Bureau of Investigation operates over 55 field offices located in major cities throughout the U.S. The bureau also has nearly 400 resident agencies in smaller cities and towns across the nation and approximately 60 international offices, called legal attaches, in the U.S. embassies worldwide.
