Established by Assembly Ordinance 84-10(S) in 1984, Anchorage Parking primary purpose is to centralize the responsibility for financing, developing and operating on-street public parking. The organization, located in Anchorage, Alaska, primarily focuses on providing on- and off-street parking spaces. It manages more than 5,800 parking spaces in three garages, six surface lots, along the park strip and on street. Anchorage Parking provides short- and long-term parking within the downtown area. Most on-street parking is intended for short-term daily use by shoppers and visitors to the downtown area. The majority of the surface-lot parking spaces are leased monthly to downtown employees. Two of the parking garages mix daily and permit parking, while the third is dedicated to permit parking. It also leases retail space to tenants that include restaurants and a grocery store that are open to the general public. In addition, the Municipal Transit Department operates public transportation from this facility.
