The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities Northern Region ensures the safe movement of people and goods. The region maintains and operates more than 100 public airports and over 5,000 vehicles. The Northern Region is responsible for managing nearly 8,350 lane miles of roads and highways and approximately 380 bridges. In addition, it maintains more than 550 lane miles of airport surfaces and over 340 public buildings. The region governs a maintenance and operations division that employs nearly 450 staff members. The division includes approximately 40 stations that handle the primary highway, airport, building and equipment maintenance needs of the adjacent segments of northern Alaska s transportation infrastructure.
