The Alabama Department of Public Safety is a statewide law enforcement agency that protects human lives and property by enforcing state laws, deterring criminal activity, and ensuring highway and public safety. Established in 1935, it maintains administrative, services, driver s license, highway patrol and protective service divisions, as well as the Alabama Bureau of Investigation. The Alabama Department of Public Safety operates the Col. E. C. Dothard Safety Education Museum, which includes a monument of department members killed in the line of duty. The museum also exhibits patrol vehicles, javelins, various weapons, gambling and narcotic paraphernalia, early radio equipment, shoulder patch collections, and badges and uniforms worn by patrol officers through the years. The Alabama Department of Public Safety maintains a state troop post in Huntsville, Ala.
