Founded by Mr. Charles B. Smith Sr. and Ms. Ruth Wilcox, S&W MINICOMPUTERS, INC was established in 1978 to meet the computer needs of local County Government. Mr. Smith worked for U.S. Steel as the computer division Manager and then for Jefferson County implementing their first computer system in Property Tax Management. Ms. Wilcox was the lead programmer for the Jefferson County Information Management System. Retirement from the County allowed them to devote their fulltime energies into establishing their own company. Today, S&W MINICOMPUTERS, INC has contracts with thirty-three Alabama counties. With twenty-six employees in 6 departments, S&W is the only Alabama company providing software, hardware, maintenance, and technical support for ALL county government offices including: County Commission, Motor Vehicle, Probate Court, Property Tax Appraisal, Tax Assessor, Tax Collector, and License Commissioner. S&W employees are solidly trained with more than 500 credited hours of class work from the Alabama Department of Revenue, IAAO, AAAO and the Center for Governmental Services, including completion of all required course work for the ACA, ( Alabama Certified Appraiser ), designation. * * * Our employees have a combined total of over 333 years experience working with county government, including practical experience both as chief clerk in tax collection offices, and as county field appraisers. This experience provides our training staff with the hands-on knowledge to professionally train the County staff.
