Decatur General is a 273-bed, nonprofit, acute-care hospital located in Southeast Decatur, Ala. Its 220-member medical staff represents 28 medical specialties. Accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, Decatur General is a member of Voluntary Hospitals of America, the largest network of nonprofit hospitals in the United States. It offers two hospital campuses and several clinics around the area. In 1888 a group of ladies banded together to care for a town suffering from a yellow fever epidemic. The ladies known as the Ladies Benevolent Society sold surplus supplies after the epidemic and set aside money to establish a hospital. In 1915 the ladies met their goal by opening Ladies Benevolent Society Hospital, the forerunner to Decatur General.
