Operational since 2001, Black Warrior Riverkeeper Inc. is a nonprofit organization that is engaged in protecting and restoring the Black Warrior River and its tributaries. Based in Birmingham, Ala., the organization strives to improve water quality, the surrounding habitat and public health near the Black Warrior River. It protects water bodies from pollution, coal mining, coal bed methane extraction, quarries, industrial discharges, sewage, industrial chicken farms, clear cutting, irresponsible development and road building. Black Warrior Riverkeeper Inc. has received the 2006 Watershed Organization of the Year award from Alabama Rivers Alliance and 2007 Conservation Organization of the Year award from the Alabama Environmental Council.
