Charted and incorporated by Congress in 1919, The American Legion is an organization serving veterans. Located in Huntsville, Ala., the organization mentors and sponsors youth programs, advocates patriotism and promotes national security. The American Legion functions through 55 departments with one operating in each of the 50 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, France, Mexico and the Philippines. It offers a range of services to service personnel and their families, including a family support network for those affected by Operation Iraqi Freedom; a National Emergency Fund to help people cope with natural calamities; a career center to address the issue of unemployment among young veterans; troop support and more.
